Dona Chanita Tequila Distillery

When I was in Puerto Vallarta, I took a day trip to visit the Dona Chanita Tequila distillery.

I’ve been to wineries and breweries, but this was my first time to see the tequila making process.

Doña Chanita is located in the mountains outside of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

They offer tours and tastings at their picturesque location.

I stopped in as part of the Vallarta Adventures Hidden Mexico Tour.

They still use many traditional methods for growing, processing and harvesting the agave used to make the tequila.

Our tour guide was knowledgeable and passionate about tequila and it’s history.

After we took the tour, tastings were offered.

White tequila has the pure taste of the distilled agave.

The darker ones get their color from the barrels in which it’s aged and other flavors.

Like wine, there is no right or wrong when it comes to tequila preferences.

Some in our group preferred the white tequila.

Others liked the richer flavors of almond, coffee and chocolate from the amber colored varieties.

What type of tequila do you prefer?

I have been searching for Dona Chanita here in the US, but haven’t found it.

Next time I’m in Puerto Vallarta, I’ll plan on picking up extra to bring home with me.
