My mom first began baking her favorite sugar cookies over 50 years ago. She is no longer able to do the baking herself, but she does still love her cookies and judges all other cookies on how well they compare to hers.
When eating another cookie, she’ll say “Well, it was ok, but it wasn’t MY recipe.” She is forgetful about many things, but she does recognize her recipe and loves it when she gets a gift of home baked sugar cookies.
Now the children and grandchildren carry on the tradition of making her sugar cookie recipe for Christmas and for other family get togethers. We enjoyed a pre-Christmas family cookie baking day last weekend and even got out her old wooden rolling pin and well-used metal cookie cutters
These are sugar cookies, but they aren’t overly sweet like a lot of current recipes. This is exactly why they are a family favorite.
When I was younger, I loved adding red or green food coloring to the dough for Christmas. Mom’s favorite way to enjoy them is with some colored sugar sprinkled on the cookies prior to baking. They can also be frosted or decorated however you’d like.
My mother kept her handwritten recipes on cards in a wood box. She wrote them out in a way that made sense to her that doesn’t exactly follow the current standard recipe format, but it worked for her and for the rest of us. Here is the recipe as she wrote it:
