Clay Oven Panaderia in Jalisco
Bread is absolutely delicious, when it is from a tradition clay oven panaderia!
There is nothing quite like fresh bread straight out of the oven.
Each culture has their own traditions and ways of making bread.
I often buy bread from a local Mexican bakery (panaderia) here in Southern California and was happy to visit an actual Mexican bakery when traveling in Mexico.
Stopping at a local panaderia outside of Puerto Vallarta was part of the Hidden Mexico tour through Vallarta Adventures.
Bread is baked the same way it has been for years.
There are large clay ovens built into a hillside outdoors.
There is no temperature gauge, but the skilled bakers know exactly what they are doing.
The bread recipe consists of just two ingredients – flour and water.
Sweet or savory fillings are often added prior to baking. It takes only four minutes to bake the bread.
When it’s ready, the baker removes it from the oven with a large wood paddle.
Currently, the filled bread is priced at 5 pesos each (less than 30 cents USD).
I tried little loaves of bread filled with cream cheese, sweet potato and chocolate.
They also had fruit fillings (strawberry, banana, pineapple…) and others with meat and cheese that cost a little more.
The bread it light and fluffy, even though the ingredients are simple.
It was fascinating to see the process and to learn more about the lifestyle of the people in this part of Mexico.
