There is something truly magical about spending a Friday evening down by the ocean here in Southern California.
Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach is always brimming with lively energy, filled with outdoor diners, local shops, and people soaking in the fresh coastal air.
On a recent Friday night, I headed down to 30 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 – right in the heart of the pedestrian-only zone near the Strand and Hermosa Pier – to dine at the iconic The Lighthouse Cafe.
Famous for its rich musical history (it has been a West Coast landmark since the 1940s!), this spot delivers the ultimate blend of great food, historic character, and oceanfront atmosphere.
🚗 A Quick Heads-Up on Parking & The Scenic Walk
If you are planning a weekend visit, be prepared: parking in downtown Hermosa Beach can be a real challenge!
The closest public lots were completely full when we arrived, so we ended up finding metered street parking a few blocks away.
The meters require a smartphone app to pay, so make sure you have your phone ready.
However, the parking hunt turned into a bonus!
We enjoyed a stunning walk along the Strand as the sun began its golden dip toward the horizon.
Walking past the waves setting the evening scene made the extra steps 100% worth it.
🌊 Front-Row Sunset Views on the Patio
Despite Pier Avenue being buzzing with crowds, we were pleasantly surprised to find plenty of outdoor patio tables available when we walked up.
We were seated immediately right on the pedestrian avenue, giving us a front-row seat to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean while we dined.
The people-watching along the avenue was enjoyable, making the outdoor seating feel like a celebration of coastal living.
🧄 Fresh, Flavorful Bites
We ordered a few shareable dishes to enjoy with the view, and the kitchen completely delivered:
- Roasted Artichoke: This was the star of our meal! It came perfectly roasted with golden melted parmesan cheese on top and a rich, creamy Caesar dip on the side.
- Blistered Shishito Peppers: Tossed in a zesty, savory sesame lime vinaigrette, these had a wonderful smoky crunch. The serving size was surprisingly generous – bigger than we expected for a small plate!
🎸 Live Music Inside (21+)
As a fantastic bonus to an already great dinner, there was a live band playing inside the cafe!
The Lighthouse Cafe has hosted legendary musicians for decades, and the band performing during our visit was exceptionally talented.
