Dehydrator and Oven Method
for Dehydrating Orange Slices
It is fun and easy to make delicious, versatile dehydrated orange slices, when you use either a dehydrator or a regular oven set to low heat.
Make them like I do with the peel on or cut it off before dehydrating.
The choice is yours.
Dehydrated oranges are delicious as a snack or you can use them in tea, cocktails or baked goods.
If you like DIY, dehydrated oranges are a lovely citrus addition to potpourri or other craft projects.
The key to successful dehydration is allowing your fruit to dehydrate for a long time at low heat.
Make sure your slices are thin and uniform, so that they dry out evenly.
I prefer using a mandoline, since each slice is perfectly sized for even dehydration.
It takes about 8 to 10 hours to dehydrate orange slices in the oven and 10 to 12 hours in a dehydrator.
If the weather is moist or your oranges are extra juicy, it will take longer than if the climate and oranges are dry.
I recommend starting yours either just before bed or first thing in the morning.
Then you will be able to remove them from the heat, when they are just right.
This isn’t a process that should be rushed, so relax and let the magic happen.
Enjoy!
Dehydrated Orange Slices Recipe
Cook Time – 10-12 hours for dehydrator OR 8-10 hours for oven
Ingredients
Oranges
Supplies
Mandoline (recommended) or Sharp Knife
Dehydrator or Baking Sheet and Parchment Paper
Instructions
1) Cut oranges into thin, even slices using a mandolin or sharp knife.
2) Remove seeds, if there are any. Either remove peel or leave on, as I do.
3) Place the orange slices in a single layer on the dehydrator sheet or on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, if you are dehydrating in the oven.
4) If you are using a dehydrator, set it to the “fruit” setting and dehydrate until the slices are the desired consistency. Depending upon your climate and the amount of moisture in your slices, it can take up to 12 hours. Start checking at about 10 hours. Then recheck every 30 minutes or so until they are done.
5) If you are using an oven, set the heat as low as possible. It will take approximately 8 to 10 hours. Start checking after 8 hours. Then recheck every 30 minutes or so until done.
6) Let the slices cool. Then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
