Family Wine Tradition in San Luis Obispo

When exploring California’s Central Coast wine country, finding a winery that balances remarkable craftsmanship with a warm, down-to-earth atmosphere is a true treat.
On a recent trip to San Luis Obispo, I spent a lovely afternoon visiting Claiborne & Churchill Winery in the heart of the cool-climate Edna Valley.
My tasting here was included as part of the “Fuel Up and Go SLO” travel package offered through the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo, and I was so happy to discover this hidden gem!

🍇 A Family Tradition Born in Edna Valley
Located just about 15 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo, the drive out to Claiborne & Churchill sets a peaceful tone.
You wind along quiet country roads lined with rolling hills and endless vineyard rows.
The winery itself has a fascinating story.
It was founded back in 1983 by Claiborne (Clay) Thompson and Fredericka Churchill Thompson.
They were both former professors at the University of Michigan who decided to leave academic life behind to chase a new dream in California wine country.
Inspired by the aromatic, dry dinner wines of Alsace, France, their very first crush yielded 565 cases of Dry Riesling and Dry Gewürztraminer.
Today, Claiborne & Churchill produces roughly 8,000 cases each year, sourcing grapes from their estate vineyards and cool maritime vineyard partners along the Central Coast.
It remains a true family affair – labor of love through and through.

🍷 A Casual, Welcoming Tasting Experience
I love learning about the science and subtle details of winemaking, and Claiborne & Churchill nails that relaxed, genuine vibe.
During my tasting, Clay Thompson and his daughter, Elizabeth, took the time to sit down and chat with me while I worked through my flight.
That personal touch is what sets family-owned boutique wineries apart!
Because the family is actively working the estate, visitors can often meet the winemaking family themselves during tastings or special events.
The grounds are gorgeous, featuring both and indoor space and shaded outdoor tables set amid lush greenery.
I opted to sit outside in a peaceful, shady spot, which was the perfect setting for sipping wine on a Fall Central Coast afternoon.

🥂 The Wine Flights: My Favorites
They offer specialized white wine flights, red wine flights, and a balanced House Flight that includes a sampling of both.
I went with the House Flight to get a comprehensive sense of their lineup.
- 2025 Central Coast Dry Riesling: Hands down my absolute favorite of the day! Dry Riesling is the style Claiborne & Churchill is famous for, and this bottle shows why. With bright citrus and lovely floral notes, it is delightfully versatile – crisp enough to enjoy on its own, yet structured enough to pair with meals or cheese boards. It makes a fantastic choice to serve at dinner or gift to almost anyone.
- 2024 Spanish Springs Chardonnay: Clay was enjoying a glass of this tasty, crisp white while we chatted about the valley and their harvest.
- The Red Lineup: I also tasted three of their featured reds—the 2024 Runestone Pinot Noir, the 2020 Greengate Pinot Noir, and their 2024 Syrah. All three were delicious, smooth, and well-crafted, though that signature Riesling stole my heart!

📍 Planning Your Visit & Wine Club Events
While walk-ins are welcomed when space allows.
Booking a reservation online ahead of time is recommended so they can have a table ready for you.
A significant portion of their boutique production is reserved for their Wine Club members, and certain small-batch varietals sell out exclusively to club members throughout the year.
They also host seasonal community events featuring local food trucks and live music on the grounds, so it is well worth checking their calendar before planning your trip.
Want to stay on the estate? They even have a cottage on the property available to rent via VRBO – a great option if you want to stay overnight right in the heart of the Edna Valley vines.
