Usually, as a vegetarian, my options at sushi restaurants are fairly basic – simple cucumber or avocado rolls.

While I enjoy them, they can feel pretty standard next to a full seafood menu.

My experience at Izakaya Osen was completely different!

The vegan roll I had here was hands down the best vegetarian food I have ever had at a Japanese restaurant.

The ambiance inside Izakaya Osen is vibrant and upscale.

During our visit, the evening weather was delightful, so we opted to sit outside on the patio.

We ended up having most of the patio area to ourselves for a wonderfully relaxed, intimate dinner.

Indoor vs. Outdoor: When we first arrived, there were open tables indoors. However, by the time we finished our meal, the dining room was completely packed! This was on a weeknight, not a weekend or holiday.
Reservations: Because of how popular this spot is, booking a reservation in advance is strongly recommended – especially if you want an indoor table. Be safe and plan ahead!

Izakaya Osen makes ordering effortless because vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are clearly marked right on the menu.

Instead of asking questions or guessing ingredients, I could quickly scan and find great options.

While several choices looked wonderful, there was one clear winner for me!

The Signature Makimono Vegan Roll 🌿

The standout highlight of my meal was the Signature Makimono Vegan Roll.

This was not just an afterthought added to the menu to check a box – it was an intentionally created, deliciously complex roll with perfect flavor and texture.

Menu Description:

Bean curd, kanpyo, tamagobo, cucumber, asparagus, and avocado topped with vegan mayo wrapped with soy paper.

The combination of savory bean curd, sweet kanpyo (seasoned gourd), pickled tamagobo (burdock root), crisp veggies, and creamy avocado wrapped in delicate soy paper was absolute perfection.

I already know I am going to order this exact same roll when I return!
