Warm Smoothie with Nutella, banana and oats
This warm Nutella smoothie recipe is sure to become a family favorite.
Chocolate hazelnut spread is always amazing and the banana and oats add extra nutrition.
A cold smoothie is nice, but when the weather cools down a warm smoothie is a satisfying comfort food drink.
Kids and adults will enjoy this chocolate smoothie that is warm instead of cold.
Chocolate and hazelnuts are a great combination, so I love using Nutella in recipes and sometimes eat it right out of the jar.
Warm smoothies are my new favorite, so I hope you hop on this trend, too.
Is this smoothie a breakfast or a dessert?
Ahh… that is a good question without a one size fits all answer.
Nutella is sweet, but can be served as either a meal or as a sweet treat.
The other ingredients are things that you would expect to be served for breakfast – milk, oatmeal and banana.
A warm smoothie is wonderful to drink on a chilly morning, so you may want to enjoy this smoothie for breakfast.
However, it can also be something that is served as a dessert after a meal, if that is what you’d prefer.
The drink is more satisfying than hot chocolate, since it has other nutritious ingredients and is more filling than just a beverage.
Some people don’t like sweets in the morning, but I won’t judge you one way or another.
Feel free to enjoy a warm chocolate Nutella smoothie first thing in the morning or later in the day or evening.
It is up to you!
Do I need to use Nutella brand spread in this recipe?
The quick and easy answer to that is no.
You can use Nutella or another brand in this recipe.
Nutella is the classic chocolate hazelnut spread that most of us are familiar with and it is quite amazing.
Quite amazing.
These days it is not the only option, so you are free to choose whatever brand you would like.
You may prefer the ingredients, level of sweetness, price, and socially conscious labeling of a particular brand, so choose what works for you.
Your warm smoothie will be pure bliss and it will get strong flavor from whichever brand spread to add to the recipe.
Can I make this warm nutella smoothie vegan?
Yes, you can easily make a version of this warm smoothie that is dairy-free and vegan with two easy substitutes.
First, you can use a milk alternative instead of regular milk.
I’d recommend coconut milk, but feel free to use whatever non-dairy milk you prefer.
The other ingredient that contains dairy and isn’t vegan is the Nutella.
Fortunately, there are plenty of options for vegan chocolate hazelnut spread.
I have tried these brands and like them:
Other alternative brands may be fine, too, but I know that I like those 3 along with the original classic (non-vegan) Nutella.
By making these two easy swaps to the warm smoothie recipe, your beverage will be vegan.
One of the optional garnishes that I listed is mini-chocolate chips, so the dairy-free folks can either skip that or use vegan chocolate chips.
Is this warm smoothie gluten free?
Yes, this is a gluten-free recipe.
The ingredient you need to be careful with is the rolled oats.
Oats do not naturally have gluten in them, but not all oat brands have a gluten-free manufacturing facility, so some cross contamination can occur.
If you are concerned about gluten, make sure you use rolled oats that are clearly labeled as certified gluten-free.
It is so much easier to find gluten-free options these days, since so many brands are being mindful and properly labeling their food products.
Why use oatmeal in a smoothie?
Oameal is a great addition to a smoothie, since it is an easy way to sneak some healthy whole grains into your breakfast.
Oats have a low glycemic index, which means they won’t cause a blood sugar spike like other more refined carbohydrates will.
Also, oats add a nice flavor to the smoothie.
Will healthy oats make a smoothie grainy?
If you like a bit of texture in your smoothie, you can blend it a little less to keep some texture in it.
The rest of us who like our smoothies smooth can easily get a creamy drink without any grainy bits just by blending it well with a good blender.
It doesn’t take long at all to blend these smoothies.
How ripe should the banana be for this smoothie recipe?
Any bananas will do, but the ripeness of your bananas will impact the flavor and sweetness of the smoothie.
As a banana ripens, the natural starches turn to sugar.
Therefore, a banana that is very ripe will be more sweet than one that is less ripe.
The bananas don’t need to be pretty, since they will be blended.
You can use whatever bananas you happen to have on hand.
What type of blender should I use?
The ingredients in this smoothie recipe are not frozen or especially hard, so a high speed blender is not necessary.
A less expensive blender that has less power should work just fine to get this batch of smoothies creamy.
If your blender isn’t as powerful, you’ll want to blend a little longer and make sure the oats are smooth.
If you can budget for it, I recommend that people invest in a good high-speed blender.
This way you can keep it for years and use it for all different types of smoothies and other foods, too.
Once you start making smoothies at home, it’s easy to get hooked and make them often.
A good blender will serve you well.
